Responsibility in Action: Foundation of Safety and Care

As part of Shanghai Sunway Law Firm people care initiative, and to strengthen the awareness of health and workplace safety, Sunway recently organised a first aid training session in our multifunctional conference room.

The session was led by Ms Huaying Lu and her team from Shanghai Tianyi First Aid Training Center, with the aim of empowering our team with critical life-saving knowledge and practical skills to respond effectively in emergency situations.

From theory to practice: Mastering the “Golden Four Minutes” Life-Saving Skills

During the session, the instructor used real-life emergency scenarios to explain the principles and procedure of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and demonstrated each key technique step by step.

Key steps of CPR

  1. Check responsiveness and breathing:
Gently tap the person's shoulders and call out to check for responsiveness. If there is no response and no normal breathing, call 120(China's emergency services number) immediately and retrieve an AED.
  2. Locate the correct position for chest compressions:
Place both hands in the centre of the chest, on the lower half of the sternum. Keep your hands overlapped and push straight down on the chest at least 5 cm and at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.
  3. Open the airway and give rescue breaths:
Use the head-tilt, chin-lift technique, pinch the nostrils, and give two breaths, each lasting one second.
  4. Continue CPR cycles until emergency medical help arrives:
Perform cycles of 30 chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths. Continue until an AED is available, the patient regains consciousness, or emergency medical help takes over.

Three Steps to Use an AED

  1. Power on and attach the pads:
Turn on the AED and place the electrode pads firmly onthe person's chest as indicated.
  2. Follow the voice instructions:
The AED will automatically measure the person's heartbeat. If a shock is needed, press the shock button as instructed.
  3. Continue monitoring:
Resume CPR immediately after the shock is delivered and continue until emergency medical help arrives.

The instructor emphasised that the critical window for saving a person  in cardiac arrest is only four minutes. Knowing how to perform CPR and use an AED  can give the person a crucial chance to survive.

Practical Application:  Reinforcing Essential First Aid Skills

To ensure the training was practical and effective, participants had the opportunity to perform techniques using training manikins. Participants worked in small groups, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to practise chest compressions and AED operation, under guided supervision.

The training atmosphere was lively, and participants noted that while the actions may appear simple, practicing them enhanced their understanding and helped them internalised theoretical concepts. By learning these skills, they can respond effectively in emergencies at work and help safeguard the safety of family and friends.
